Solomon tells us to get wisdom - Proverbs 4:55
Wisdom cries in the street, but there are few takers.
For most of it, it is like water rolling off a leaf.
Man is not wise.
1 Cor 1:25 tells us "For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom".
At best, we are street smart. At
worst, cunning
Ecc 8:17 recorded Solomon as saying, "Then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all his efforts to search it out, man cannot discover its meaning. Even if a wise man claims he knows, he cannot really comprehend it."
To be wise,
like cup, we must empty it of its present contents, clean up the residule and then fill it up with the right stuff."
1.Empty: we need to take away the
focus on self. With self-interest, we will only be looking out for ourselves, concerned only how we look or how much it will cost us. We cannot be really wise or work towards the good of others if self is not emptied like our Lord did (Phil 2:5-8).
2. Cleanse: our minds must be renewed (Romans 12:1,2). It must be cleansed of
human reasoning because
with God all things possible.
Think outside the box!
3. Fill: start with these 3 things.
A. The fear of the Lord.
According tp Proverbs 9:10, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." A great place to start - at the beginning.
B. Leaning on the Lord. Again, Proverbs tells us
(3:5) to "Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight." For straight paths - like a tree planted by the rivers of water (Psalm 1), give God the praise!
C. Wait on the Lord. The Psalmist writes in Psalm
130:5, "I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning." The prophet writes in Isaiah
40:31 that "they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint."
Jesus concluded his Sermon on Mount by making reference to the
wise and foolish builder. Let us be like young
Solomon, who showed wisdom by asking for wisdom.
