My 7 Favorite Handhelds
I was going to entitle this writeup, 'the 7 Best Heldheld Devices', but decided that this may be too presumptuous. Click on the hyperlinks to read my detailed experiences/evaluation of these devices. So here goes...
1. The best handheld device ever created must be the Sony PSP. It is capable of doing almost anything... from internet to MP3, videos and games and most things in-between. It is made just right for portable gaming and one of the few devices that allows you to serve the web while lying comfortably on the couch.
2. The Windows PPC PDA comes a close second. With GPS
built-in on the newer devices, you can take it for a spin, internet, sms, email or just a phone call. Games on the PPC have more depth and looks a lot better than Palm PDA games. Great stuff, this.
3. The Archos personal portable video player is a neat little entertainer that will keep you occupied on long trips. Extremely easy to use, you can record TV, VCD and DVD to go. MP3 and Photographs will also find lots of hard disk space in these devices. On top of all the fun, you can double it as a portable hard disk.
4. The Sony Ericsson P910i is probably the best and most expensive phone around that keeps its value while others plunge. It is a great phone, allows multiple emails accounts and surfs the web effortlessly with the popular Opera browser. The Symbian OS runs many games and applications including the Bible. It would be my daily mobile phone of choice if its form factor was more akin to the Motorola Razr.
5. Coming fifth is once the most popular PDA in the world, the Palm PDA. Amongst the many models, the Zodiac is amongst the most powerful with the largest built-in RAM of any Palm device. As if this is not enough, the Zodiac is the only Palm with 2 SD slots. The great thing about Palm is that you can back up everything real fast, let it alone for years, recharge the device then restore it back to whence you left it.
6. The Nintendo DS/GBA is a great gaming handheld with tons of cartridges available - more than any other. While it is not widely known, many shop sells an adapter called the 'supercard' where you can download GBA/GB games on a CF or SD card and play these games just as you would, a cartridge. PDroms has tons of free legal games to keep you occupied until kingdom come.
7. Although my wife likes both my Ipod and Nano, I find myself using Creative's Zen player more often than the other 2. While Ipods look good, the software is really for Apple users and I had a hard time messing around with iTunes and the photo software. Creative is Windows based, easy to use and comes with a really capable FM radio and voice recorder.
P/S. Honorary Mention: I would be lost without my trusty Franklin language master. It is not only a great spell checker and thesaurus, but with Bookman cartridges, I have used an handheld Bible even before PDAs come to the scene. Numerous bookman cartridges are available - from games to cooking recipes. I have one sitting next to my computer at work and another at home.
